Government Institute of Textile Chemistry and Knitting Technology is situated in Ludhiana the Industrial Town on Punjab, India. Originally the Govt. Institute of Dyeing and Calico Printing was started under the name of Government Dyeing School in the year 1916, in the premises of Government central Weavery, Lahore. In 1923 a Calico Printing class was added and its name was changed to Government Institute of Dyeing and Calico Printing in Foreman Christian College, Shahdara near Lahore now in Pakistan.
The present Institute was constituted by amalgamating two old Institutes viz. Government Hosiery Institute, Ludhiana (established 1926) and Government Institute of Dyeing and Calico Printing Ludhiana (established 1923) located in the same premises. Amalgamation was affected during Third five-year Plan of the Government. In 1967, the Institute was upgraded to polytechnic and renamed Government Institute of Textile Chemistry and Knitting Technology, Ludhiana.
Primary Objectives of the Institution
To produce technical manpower capable of meeting the challenges faced by the textile processing & knitting industry in the fast technological scenario.
To expand consultancy services to the industry in the field of.

(b) Textile Technology (Knitting)
To encourage entrepreneurial activities by rendering all possible help to the pass out students.
To prepare the rural/urban youth for self-employment through IRG scheme.
To interact with industries for curriculum development, evaluation and for imparting training to students.
